Spoils Of War

THE STORY SO FAR...

You were captured 3 days ago after ejecting from your burning Hornet near Maeng San
during an unsuccessful raid. Now, after 2 days interrogation, you are more than ready
to get back home. All your enemy has learned is your name, rank and serial number,
your personal feelings about your interrogators and their parentage, and your opinion
of the sleeping arrangements and the apparent lack of any McDonald's franchise in the
vicinity. Would the North have gone to war at all if McDonald's were there to give the
people a taste of democracy?

It is a little after 0100, and your interrogators have just heard your thoughts on
this subject. Suddenly, there is pandemonium, and they rush out - in the words of your
interrogator, the 'Imperialist Dogs' have succeeded in surprising the base with a large
strike force, following up on the recent debacle, and are within 20 miles. You think 'I
bet my wingman is leading them - he could never bear to miss the action'. They are sure
to be after the defences and structures, and will probably try to damage the runway as
well. Not much point in hanging about here any longer - the base is about to be trashed
and you'll be taken north to imprisonment for the duration - you will be further than
ever from that Big Mac you want!

You have been able to see some of the activity on the base, and you know that an SU-27
on the nearby ramp is serviced and ready to fly. That is your way out - you must use
the diversion provided by the raid to hijack this aircraft and escape. You overpower
the guard while he is glancing out the window wondering whether he would be better
saving his own skin rather than protecting yours, and manage to get out of the building.
You see the Flanker and run to it, thanking your lucky stars that it's not only dark,
but foggy as well. In the cockpit, you know that you really do stand a chance of making
it out - your aircraft is loaded for SEAD. That is the best news - the border defences
are strong, the quickest way to your burger is to the south, and you haven't eaten very
much in the last 3 days. You manage to get your wingman on the radio to warn him of your
escape, but this alerts the enemy as well. You know that any help you can give them will
be invaluable - several Flankers are taking off now, and there are a couple of SAM's nearby.

You were lucky to have had the chance to familiarise yourself with a captured Flanker a
couple of weeks ago at Seoul, and you know that they are fast and deadly, but lack
maneuverability at high speed - give yourself plenty of vertical airspace and watch
out for the ground! You spool up the engines and try to remember the layout of the
taxiways. The fog doesn't help, but you know that the Flanker will have to be turned
hard left to avoid the soft ground behind the hangers. You hope that you will be able
to see enough to reach the taxiway and get airborne before the strike craters the runway.
With any luck the Hornets will be able to hit the SAM's near the base in time for you to
get clear, but there is still that pesky AAA. Will they get it all? You'll soon find out,
but if you keep low 'til you're away you should be OK anyway.

Just think of the welcome you'll get when you return to Dongducheon with this little beauty!
They're sure to give you some R&R in Seoul - that's all the incentive you need to get back
in one piece - and you can smell that burger already! Still, you have to get there first...
The SAM's are thick along the border, but if you stick with the strike force and help them
fight their way out, it shouldn't be a problem. Good luck - there'll be one waiting on the
bar for you!

BRIEFING

Before entering the cockpit, be sure to go to the Pilot window and type < fly:SU27-03 >
in the callsign field, then select this mission. You won't be able to change the loadout,
so go through and fly the mission. Get airborne as soon as possible to avoid the strike on
the base, and be ready to engage the air defences if necessary. The enemy are aware of your
actions, and will treat you as hostile, so be aggressive, but remember that you still need
to break through the border defences. There will be plenty to keep you busy. Help out your
rescuers - the destruction of Maeng San is essential - but try to stay in one piece! Your
destination is Dongducheon - waypoint 3.

ALTERNATIVE SCENARIO

If you would like to try flying this as Hornet 1, leave the callsign field empty and start
the mission as usual. You will be about to strike Maeng San, and your mission will then be
to ensure the destruction of the base, and protect the escaping Flanker. It is flown by your
wingman, who has just been through the experiences described above.
